The Kangana Ranaut Jaya Bachchan exchange has drawn attention after Kangana reacted to a video showing Jaya Bachchan refusing to explain a protest-related question to a reporter. The incident took place during the INDIA bloc’s protest in Delhi over the functioning of the Election Commission and the demand for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation.

A reporter asked Jaya about a protest placard being carried by Trinamool Congress MP Derek O’Brien. Jaya responded, “Don’t twist the matter.” When the reporter asked what the matter was, she replied, “Nahi bataungi” (I won’t tell).

Kangana Ranaut shared the interaction on her Instagram Stories and commented on Jaya’s response.

She wrote that people participate in a dharna to make a point publicly, but when asked what point they are making, Jaya’s response was, “nahi bataungi,” accompanied by laughing emojis.

The exchange has added another moment of public disagreement between the two actors-turned-politicians, who have previously expressed contrasting views on political and social issues.

What Did Jaya Bachchan Say About the Protest?

Jaya has been participating in the Opposition’s ongoing agitation against the Election Commission.

During another media interaction, she said that the leaders would continue their protest as long as they were able to do so. When asked whether she believed the demonstration was about protecting democracy and whether the Election Commission was being discriminatory, she responded in the affirmative.

She was also asked about the participation of Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and the unity of the INDIA bloc. Jaya said that the leaders participating in the protest were part of the larger message being conveyed by the gathering.

Opposition Protest Escalates in Delhi

The exchange came amid a larger confrontation between Opposition parties and authorities over the Election Commission.

On October 6, INDIA bloc MPs marched from Parliament towards the Election Commission headquarters, demanding Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation. The Election Commission said it had not received a formal appointment request from a political party before 4 pm and offered to send a senior official to receive the MPs’ memorandum, a proposal that the MPs declined.

Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and several other Opposition MPs were later detained during the protest and subsequently released.

The political standoff over the Election Commission and electoral-roll issues continues, while the Kangana-Jaya exchange has become another widely discussed moment from the protest.
