The Delhi Chalo March on October 12 saw Congress and INDIA bloc workers raise “Vote Chor, Gaddi Chhod” slogans during demonstrations in the national capital, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Ganesh Kumar. Protesters gathered at multiple locations in central Delhi, while security was tightened and restrictions were imposed on public gatherings.
One group assembled near Himachal Bhavan in the Mandi House area alongside Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu. Demonstrators raised slogans alleging threats to democratic rights and attempted to march towards the Supreme Court.
INDIA Bloc Leaders Gather in Central Delhi
Separately, INDIA bloc leaders assembled outside the Constitution Club on Rafi Marg as part of the opposition alliance’s ‘Delhi Chalo’ call.
The demonstrations brought heightened activity to parts of Lutyens’ Delhi, with paramilitary personnel deployed alongside police forces to manage the crowds and maintain security.
During the protest, one demonstrator said, “Loktantra jakal kiya hai hathkadiyon mein,” alleging that democratic freedoms and voting rights were being deliberately weakened. The slogan reflected the protesters’ accusations, which were part of the political demonstrations.
Delhi Police Enforces Restrictions
Delhi Police enforced restrictions under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), which can be used to regulate public gatherings in situations requiring preventive action.
The security arrangements and demonstrations also affected traffic movement around Mandi House and nearby areas, creating disruption in parts of central Delhi.
Authorities deployed personnel to manage the gatherings as opposition workers continued their demonstrations.
Jantar Mantar Reportedly Removed as Protest Venue
Amid the developments, reports emerged that the Ministry of Home Affairs had denotified Jantar Mantar as a designated protest site. Ramlila Maidan, Burari Ground and Shahdara Ground were identified as alternative venues for demonstrations.
The reported change in designated protest locations adds another dimension to the management of public demonstrations in the capital, where authorities must balance public order with the right to peaceful assembly.
The protests underscore the continuing political confrontation between opposition parties and the Election Commission over electoral concerns. The demonstrators’ allegations remain claims made during the protest, while their demand for the Chief Election Commissioner’s resignation has become a central focus of the Delhi Chalo mobilisation.
