Monalisa Bhosle, popularly known on social media as the “Kumbh Mela girl”, has married her boyfriend Farman Khan in Kerala after seeking police protection amid opposition from her family. The couple tied the knot at a temple in Thiruvananthapuram, bringing an end to days of tension surrounding their interfaith relationship.
The wedding ceremony took place at the Nainar Temple, where the couple solemnised their marriage in the presence of authorities and close associates. Police protection was provided after the couple approached law enforcement authorities, citing concerns about potential opposition from family members.
Monalisa had gained widespread attention during the Prayagraj Kumbh Mela, where her photographs and videos went viral on social media platforms. After the event, she became popularly referred to as the “Kumbh Mela girl,” drawing significant public interest.
According to officials, both Monalisa Bhosle and Farman Khan are adults and legally eligible to make independent decisions regarding marriage. Authorities confirmed that after verifying their documents and statements, they provided necessary protection to ensure the couple could marry safely without disruption.
Following the ceremony, Monalisa spoke to reporters and said she was happy with her decision. She explained that the couple chose Kerala as their wedding destination because they admired the state and felt it would be a peaceful place to begin their new life together.
The interfaith marriage had reportedly faced resistance from some family members, which prompted the couple to seek assistance from police authorities. Such cases often involve concerns about personal safety when couples decide to marry against family wishes.
Police officials stated that their role was to ensure the safety of the individuals involved and uphold their legal rights as adults. Authorities emphasised that adults have the constitutional freedom to choose their life partners and that law enforcement steps in when there is a risk to their security.
The wedding has since attracted attention online, with social media users discussing the couple’s decision and the circumstances surrounding the ceremony. Interfaith marriages often generate public debate in India, particularly when families oppose the relationship.
Legal experts point out that Indian law allows adults to marry a partner of their choice regardless of religion, provided they meet the legal requirements under the relevant marriage laws. Police protection is sometimes provided when couples anticipate threats or harassment.
For Monalisa and Farman Khan, the ceremony marks the beginning of a new chapter after a period of uncertainty. The couple expressed hope that their families will eventually accept their decision and support their married life.
