Leh Shuts Schools and Colleges on September 26–27 Amid Escalating Protests

The administration of the Union Territory of Ladakh has announced the closure of all educational institutions in Leh district for two days, citing security concerns following escalating protests.

In an official order issued by District Magistrate Romil Singh Donk, IAS, all schools, colleges, anganwadi centres, and coaching institutes—both government and private—will remain closed on September 26 and 27, 2025.

Reason Behind the Closure

The move comes in the wake of violent demonstrations demanding statehood for Ladakh and the inclusion of the region under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution to safeguard tribal rights. The protests, which turned violent on September 24, resulted in four deaths and left over 80 people injured, including security personnel. Government buildings and vehicles were also set ablaze during the unrest.

Official Instructions

The District Magistrate has directed the Chief Education Officer, college principals, and heads of institutions to ensure strict compliance with the closure order. The Senior Superintendent of Police, Leh, has also been alerted for enforcement, while the Director of School Education and Programme Officer of ICDS have been tasked with monitoring adherence.

Additionally, the Assistant Director of DIPR Leh has been instructed to publicize the order widely to avoid confusion.

Ensuring Safety

Officials have stressed that the decision was made purely in the interest of public safety and urged institutions to strictly implement the directive. The closure is seen as a preventive measure to protect students, staff, and the general public during this period of unrest.
