Lokesh Kanagaraj Accepts Coolie Criticism, Promises Better Next Film

Director Lokesh Kanagaraj has responded to criticism surrounding his latest film Coolie, acknowledging the feedback and assuring audiences that he will work on improving his craft in future projects.

Released in theatres on August 14, Coolie features Rajinikanth in the lead role and opened to mixed reviews from critics and viewers. While the film faced sharp criticism over its screenplay and writing, it has gone on to record a strong commercial run, reportedly crossing Rs 500 crore in worldwide box office collections.

‘I will try to rectify it’

Addressing the feedback at a press event on December 26, Lokesh Kanagaraj said he was aware of the criticism and took it in the right spirit.

Coolie received thousands of criticisms. I will try to rectify them in my next film. Even with those criticisms, people watched the film for Rajinikanth sir. The producer told me the film collected Rs 500 crore. Thanks to everyone,” the filmmaker said.

His remarks struck a conciliatory note, balancing gratitude for the film’s success with an acceptance of its shortcomings.

Filmmaking beyond expectations

Earlier, in September, Kanagaraj spoke at a conclave organised by SSVM Institutions in Coimbatore, where he explained his approach to storytelling. He said he does not write scripts to match inflated expectations but focuses on stories he believes in.

“If the story meets expectations, that’s great. If it doesn’t, I will try to improve next time,” he said, underlining his intent to grow rather than chase formulas.

Star power drives box office

Coolie boasts a large ensemble cast including Nagarjuna, Soubin Shahir, Shruti Haasan, Sathyaraj, Rachita Ram, Upendra, and Aamir Khan.

The film follows Deva, a former union leader played by Rajinikanth, as he investigates the mysterious death of his friend Rajasekhar. His pursuit of the truth pits him against gangster Simon, portrayed by Nagarjuna, and his associate Dayal, played by Soubin Shahir.

While many viewers criticised the film for a weak narrative and formulaic elements, industry observers note that Rajinikanth’s enduring star power played a decisive role in drawing audiences to theatres.

Commercial success despite criticism

Despite the backlash, Coolie’s box office performance underlines the continued influence of star-led cinema in the Tamil film industry. The film’s success highlights how loyal fan bases and marquee names can offset mixed critical reception, even as filmmakers face growing scrutiny over content and storytelling.
