Greater Noida Police on Tuesday arrested real estate developer Abhay Kumar in connection with the death of software engineer Yuvraj Mehta, whose car plunged into a water-filled pit in Greater Noida late Friday night. The arrest marks a significant development in a case that has triggered widespread outrage over alleged civic negligence and construction safety lapses.
Abhay Kumar is the owner of MZ Wishtown, a housing project located in the Knowledge Park area. Police confirmed that Kumar was named in the FIR and taken into custody by the Knowledge Park police station team following preliminary findings that pointed to serious safety violations at the site.
The arrest comes as a Special Investigation Team (SIT), constituted on the directions of Yogi Adityanath, intensified its probe into the circumstances leading to the engineer’s death. The SIT held a high-level meeting at the Greater Noida Authority office on Tuesday before conducting a detailed on-site inspection of the accident location.
Senior police officials confirmed that multiple government and authority officials have already been questioned. The SIT is also in the process of recording statements from the victim’s family members, including Yuvraj Mehta’s father, Rajkumar Mehta, who has repeatedly alleged gross inaction by authorities during the rescue attempt.
According to officials, one of the key focus areas of the probe is the nearly two-hour delay in rescue efforts, despite emergency services and local authorities being present at the scene. Investigators are examining why no personnel entered the water-filled pit to attempt a direct rescue, even as the victim remained trapped.
On Friday night, Yuvraj Mehta was returning home to Tata Eureka Park in Sector 150 from his workplace in Gurugram when his speeding SUV plunged into a deep, water-filled pit near Knowledge Park. The pit, dug for the construction of a mall, had been lying abandoned for over three years, according to local residents.
With no barricades, warning signs or reflectors in place, the site had reportedly become a known accident-prone zone. Heavy rainwater and sewage had accumulated in the pit over time, turning it into a hidden hazard, especially during low visibility conditions.
After the car fell in, it reportedly overturned and began floating due to the high water level. Yuvraj managed to exit the vehicle and called his father, informing him about the accident. His father immediately alerted emergency services and rushed to the spot. However, despite repeated pleas for help, no immediate rescue operation was carried out.
A post-mortem later confirmed that the 27-year-old engineer died due to drowning and suffocation.
Based on a complaint filed by the victim’s father, police registered an FIR against MJ Wishtown Planner Limited and Lotus Green Construction Private Limited for alleged negligence and failure to implement basic safety measures.
The incident has already led to sweeping administrative action. The Uttar Pradesh government removed the Noida Authority CEO from his post, citing serious lapses in oversight and accountability. A junior engineer has also been dismissed, and further action against other officials is expected based on the SIT’s findings.
The case has reignited concerns over unregulated construction, abandoned infrastructure projects and the absence of safety enforcement in rapidly expanding urban areas. Residents have alleged that repeated complaints about the open pit were ignored for years.
As the SIT continues its probe, authorities have indicated that more arrests and disciplinary actions may follow once responsibility is conclusively fixed. The final report is expected to be submitted to the state government within days.
