Om Birla Takes Dig at Rahul Gandhi After No-Confidence Motion Defeat in Lok Sabha

Om Birla resumed his duties as Speaker of the Lok Sabha and responded strongly to criticism from opposition parties after a no-confidence motion against him was defeated in the House. In his remarks, Birla emphasised that the parliamentary system functions according to rules and procedures and that no individual, including the Leader of the Opposition, stands above the House.

The comments were widely seen as a direct reference to Rahul Gandhi, as political tensions between the government and opposition continued during the ongoing parliamentary session.

The no-confidence motion against the Speaker had been moved by opposition parties, accusing him of showing partisan behaviour during parliamentary proceedings. However, the motion was rejected through a voice vote, allowing Birla to continue in his role as Speaker.

Speaking after returning to the Speaker’s chair, Om Birla rejected allegations that his conduct had been biased. He stated that throughout his tenure he had attempted to ensure that all Members of Parliament were given opportunities to express their views during debates in the House.

Birla emphasised that parliamentary democracy operates through collective procedures and institutional authority rather than individual positions. In this context, he said that some people appear to believe the Leader of the Opposition is above the House, but such an idea does not align with parliamentary traditions.

The Speaker also highlighted the importance of maintaining decorum and discipline during parliamentary debates. According to him, the responsibility of the Speaker is to ensure that proceedings run smoothly while providing fair chances for both ruling party members and opposition representatives to participate in discussions.

The defeat of the no-confidence motion marked a significant moment in the ongoing political standoff between the government and opposition parties in Parliament. Opposition leaders had argued that the Speaker’s actions during recent sessions had limited their ability to raise certain issues.
