Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has praised the Indian diaspora for its reputation as a peace-loving and law-abiding community, saying Indians are welcomed in host countries because they respect public life and do not indulge in vandalism.
Speaking to members of the Indian community in Berlin during his two-day visit to Germany, Goyal said Indians had earned respect overseas through their peaceful behaviour, family-oriented lives and contributions to society.
He said the community was valued in host countries because its members were known for following the law and maintaining social harmony.
Goyal also contrasted the conduct of Indians abroad with demonstrations in parts of Europe that have sometimes escalated into violence and property damage.
Minister Refers to Protests Across Europe
Goyal’s remarks came amid protests in several European countries, including France, Spain and Italy, over issues such as rising living costs, wages and public services.
While many demonstrations have remained peaceful, some have reportedly resulted in clashes, looting and vandalism.
The minister said the Indian community’s reputation made its members welcome in countries such as Germany. His comments highlighted the importance of responsible conduct and the role diaspora communities play in shaping perceptions of their home countries.
The remarks also placed the spotlight on the Indian diaspora’s contribution to people-to-people relations between India and its international partners.
Goyal Urges Diaspora to Support Indian Students
During his interaction in Berlin, Goyal urged established members of the Indian community to support Indian students arriving in Germany, particularly those from financially weaker backgrounds.
He said assistance from fellow Indians could help students adapt to an unfamiliar environment and navigate the challenges of living and studying abroad.
Goyal also praised Indian workers, describing them as sincere and hardworking. He highlighted their contribution to strengthening social connections and economic relations between India and Germany.
India-Germany Cooperation on Trade and Technology
Goyal’s Germany visit also included meetings with government officials, business leaders and research institutions. Discussions focused on expanding cooperation in trade, investment, advanced manufacturing and emerging technologies.
The visit reflects efforts to strengthen economic engagement between the two countries while encouraging closer links between their people, businesses and research communities.
