India head into the ICC Men's T20 World Cup as one of the strongest contenders for the title, backed by consistent performances and the status of the world’s top-ranked T20I side. However, former India captain Rohit Sharma believes that success in the tournament will depend on how effectively the team management resolves a critical selection dilemma.
Speaking ahead of the World Cup, Rohit highlighted what he sees as India’s biggest challenge: finalising the right team combinations, particularly when it comes to managing the spin attack. India’s spin trio — Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakravarthy, and Axar Patel — has been highly effective over the past year, regularly dismantling opposition batting line-ups.
Rohit pointed out that the decision to play both Kuldeep and Varun together presents a tactical challenge, especially in Indian conditions. According to him, fielding two specialist wrist-spinners would likely force the team to reduce its pace-bowling options — a risky trade-off in a global tournament.
“The biggest challenge for the captain and coach will be whether they can play both Kuldeep and Varun together,” Rohit said. He explained that doing so would require India to operate with only two specialist fast bowlers, which could prove problematic depending on conditions and match situations.
A major factor complicating the decision is dew. The tournament will be played during the transition from winter to spring, a period when evening matches across most Indian venues are heavily affected by moisture. Rohit noted that dew significantly reduces the effectiveness of spinners, making it harder for them to grip the ball and control lengths.
He pointed out that nearly every major Indian venue — including traditionally dry centres — experiences heavy dew during this time of year. As a result, playing three spinners could leave India exposed, particularly while defending totals.
If India opt to include Axar, Kuldeep and Varun in the same XI, it could mean sacrificing a frontline seamer such as Arshdeep Singh. In that scenario, the pace attack would revolve around Jasprit Bumrah, supported by all-rounders Hardik Pandya and Shivam Dube.
Rohit acknowledged that there are no easy answers. Dropping any one of India’s top bowlers would mean leaving out a world-class performer, making selection calls particularly tough for captain Suryakumar Yadav and head coach Gautam Gambhir.
Ultimately, Rohit believes flexibility will be key. Rather than sticking rigidly to a fixed XI, India may need to adapt combinations based on venue, dew conditions and opposition strengths. The former captain stressed that such tactical clarity could make the difference between dominance and disappointment in a tightly contested tournament.
India begin their T20 World Cup campaign on February 7 against the USA, with group-stage matches scheduled across Mumbai, Delhi, Colombo and Ahmedabad. As expectations soar, Rohit’s assessment underlines that even favourites must navigate fine margins to lift the trophy.
