Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has addressed Cristiano Ronaldo’s recent comments about the state of the club, acknowledging past failures while steering the conversation firmly toward the future. Ronaldo, speaking in an interview earlier this week, suggested that no manager could “work miracles” under United’s present structural limitations, even though he praised Amorim’s efforts.
Ronaldo, now playing for Al-Nassr, argued that the issues at Old Trafford extend beyond coaching and lie within deeper organisational shortcomings. He expressed concern that, despite having some talented players, the overall system lacked the long-term planning and support needed for sustained success. The former United forward stressed that even the best managers would struggle without a strong foundation.
Amorim avoided engaging directly with Ronaldo’s sharper remarks but did acknowledge the broader point that the club’s past was filled with misjudgements. Speaking ahead of United’s weekend match against Tottenham Hotspur, he reminded reporters that his staff is committed to reshaping the club’s culture from within.
“He understands the impact of everything he says,” Amorim responded. “We accept that there were many mistakes before. But we’re changing the structure, the behaviour, and the way we operate. What’s done is done — our focus is moving forward.”
Amorim stepped into the role in late 2024, inheriting a side that was struggling with inconsistency and low morale. Over the past year, United have found pockets of stability, rising to eighth place and sitting just two points off second after a strong four-match unbeaten run. Their upcoming fixture against Tottenham offers a chance to climb higher, while also serving as an emotional rematch of last season’s Europa League final, where Spurs edged United 1–0 to deny them a Champions League berth.
The Portuguese coach credited internal reforms for the team’s growing confidence. According to Amorim, the squad’s mentality, understanding of tactics, and cohesion have improved significantly compared to last season. He emphasised that revised training methods, behavioural standards, and clearer communication channels have played a major role in the team’s progress.
Amorim also noted that the absence of European football this season, though disappointing on the surface, has allowed United more time to organise, strategise, and develop their players. He said the squad is using this period to sharpen its identity ahead of tougher challenges.
While Ronaldo’s critique reignited debates about United’s long-standing structural issues, Amorim’s response made it clear that the focus remains on rebuilding — not revisiting the turbulence that defined previous years.
