Shaheen Afridi Injury Scare Puts Pakistan on Alert Ahead of T20 World Cup 2026

Shaheen Afridi Injury Scare Puts Pakistan on Alert Ahead of T20 World Cup 2026

Pakistan have suffered a major injury scare ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup after star fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi picked up a knee injury during a Big Bash League match on Saturday.

Afridi was forced to limp off the field while representing Brisbane Heat against Adelaide Strikers at The Gabba in Brisbane, raising concerns over his availability for the global tournament beginning in February.

How the injury happened

The incident occurred in the 14th over of the Strikers’ run chase when Jamie Overton struck a powerful shot past mid-on. Afridi, stationed in the deep, attempted to chase the ball but immediately began limping, clearly in discomfort.

At the end of the over, the left-arm pacer walked off the field pointing to his right knee, unable to complete his full spell. He finished with figures of 3 overs for 26 runs without taking a wicket.

Pakistan’s World Cup plans under cloud

With the T20 World Cup just weeks away, Pakistan will be hoping the injury is not serious. The team is aiming to end a 17-year wait for a global title, having last lifted the trophy in 2009.

Pakistan are scheduled to open their campaign on February 7 against the Netherlands cricket team at Colombo’s Sinhalese Sports Club. They will then face the United States cricket team on February 10, before a marquee clash against arch-rivals India cricket team on February 15.

Tough tournament so far for Afridi

Afridi has endured a difficult BBL campaign, managing just two wickets in four matches while conceding runs at an economy rate of over 11. His struggles were evident earlier this month when he was taken off the attack for dangerous bowling during a match against the Melbourne Renegades in Geelong.

In that game, Afridi bowled a high full toss that forced batter Oliver Peake to evade the delivery. After a discussion with Heat captain Nathan McSweeney, the umpires decided to remove Afridi from the attack despite his immediate apology.

Focus on recovery

Pakistan’s team management is expected to closely monitor Afridi’s fitness in the coming days. Given his importance as the leader of the pace attack, any prolonged absence could significantly impact Pakistan’s chances at the T20 World Cup.

For now, all eyes will be on medical updates, with fans and selectors hoping the injury proves to be a minor setback rather than a tournament-threatening blow.
