Indian cricket star Smriti Mandhana has been named Indian Sportswoman of the Year at the BBC Indian Sportswoman of the Year Awards, recognising her exceptional performances during a memorable 2025 season. The elegant left-handed opener played a central role in India’s Women’s World Cup triumph and guided Royal Challengers Bengaluru to another Women’s Premier League (WPL) title.
The award caps a golden year for Mandhana, who continued to establish herself as one of the most influential figures in women’s cricket.
Mandhana served as India’s vice-captain during the victorious 2025 ICC Women’s World Cup campaign and was among the tournament’s standout performers. She amassed 434 runs, playing crucial innings that helped India secure the prestigious title.
Her consistency at the top of the order provided stability and momentum, contributing significantly to the team’s success on the global stage.
Beyond international cricket, Mandhana enjoyed further success in franchise cricket. She led Royal Challengers Bengaluru to their second Women’s Premier League championship, reinforcing her reputation as a match-winner across formats and competitions.
Her leadership and batting prowess played a vital role in the team’s dominant campaign.
While accepting the award, Mandhana described 2025 as a landmark year for women’s cricket and expressed satisfaction at contributing to India’s victories.
She highlighted the significance of the World Cup win and the growth of the women’s game, which continues to attract wider audiences and recognition.
Mandhana made her international debut at just 16 and has since become one of India’s most dependable batters. She has scored 17 international centuries, a record she shares with Australian great Meg Lanning.
Her contributions have helped elevate the profile of women’s cricket in India and inspired a new generation of athletes.
Mandhana secured the honour ahead of a strong field that included captain Harmanpreet Kaur, chess prodigy Divya Deshmukh, shooter Suruchi Singh, and hurdler Jyothi Yarraji.
The awards also celebrated emerging and veteran talent across sports. Divya Deshmukh received the Emerging Player of the Year award after her FIDE Women’s World Cup triumph. Para-athlete Preethi Pal was named Para-Sportswoman of the Year for her medal-winning performance at the Paris Paralympics, while shooting legend Anjali Bhagwat received the Lifetime Achievement Award.
Mandhana’s recognition highlights the rapid rise of women’s sport in India and the growing visibility of female athletes across disciplines.
Her achievements in both international and franchise cricket underline her status as one of the leading ambassadors of the modern women’s game and a symbol of India’s sporting excellence.
