Somnath Swabhiman Parv: PM Modi to Attend 1,000-Year Resilience Festival in Gujarat

Gujarat has begun a historic four-day cultural and spiritual celebration titled Somnath Swabhiman Parv, commemorating 1,000 years of resilience and revival of the Somnath Temple, one of India’s most revered Jyotirlingas. The festival, which runs from January 8 to January 11, marks a millennium since the temple faced destruction during the invasion of Mahmud of Ghazni in 1026 AD and honours its repeated reconstruction as a symbol of civilisational continuity and faith.

The grand event is being held at Somnath Temple, drawing devotees, scholars and cultural enthusiasts from across the country. The festival is envisioned as a tribute to India’s spiritual endurance and cultural self-respect, highlighting how Somnath has risen time and again despite repeated attacks over centuries.

Spiritual and Cultural Highlights

One of the central features of the Swabhiman Parv is a 72-hour uninterrupted Omkar Jap, being performed simultaneously across 243 temples in Gujarat and other parts of the country. The continuous chanting is intended to symbolise spiritual unity and collective devotion, reinforcing Somnath’s role as a cornerstone of Sanatan heritage.

Adding a modern dimension to the historic narrative, organisers have planned a large-scale drone show involving 3,000 drones, which will visually depict key moments from the temple’s long and turbulent history. The aerial display is expected to narrate Somnath’s journey — from destruction and desecration to reconstruction and revival — blending technology with tradition.

Cultural programmes, discourses, and exhibitions are also part of the four-day schedule, showcasing the architectural, historical and spiritual significance of Somnath and its place in India’s civilisational story.

Prime Minister Modi’s Visit on January 11

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Somnath on January 11, where he will offer prayers at the temple and address a large public gathering. His participation is seen as a key moment in the festival, underscoring the national importance of the occasion.

The Prime Minister’s visit coincides with another significant milestone — 75 years since the reconstruction of the Somnath Temple was initiated after Independence. The rebuilding effort was spearheaded by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, who viewed the temple’s revival as a matter of national pride and cultural restoration.
