Tesla Model Y registrations increased in the first half of FY27 as the electric carmaker expanded its presence in India.

Tesla India FY26 profit reached ₹5.16 crore as Tesla India Motors and Energy expanded its business following the electric vehicle maker's entry into the Indian market in 2025.

The company reported revenue from operations of ₹247.31 crore in FY26, nearly 12 times the ₹20.83 crore recorded in FY25. Net profit also increased from ₹55.49 lakh in the previous financial year to ₹5.16 crore.

FY26 marked the first financial year in which vehicle sales contributed to Tesla India's revenue. Its FY25 income had come entirely from services, before the company began selling its Model Y after opening its first showroom in Mumbai in July 2025.

Vehicle sales generated ₹214.69 crore, accounting for nearly 87% of total revenue, while services contributed ₹32.40 crore.

Model Y Registrations Increase in India

The Model Y has played a central role in Tesla's early sales performance. According to Vahan data cited in the report, the company recorded 346 vehicle registrations between September 2025 and March 2026.

Registrations rose to 650 between April and September FY27. Average monthly registrations increased from around 49 to 108, indicating stronger activity from a relatively small initial base.

Tesla currently offers the Model Y and Model Y L in India. The five-seat Model Y starts at ₹50.89 lakh, ex-showroom, with a claimed range of up to 500 km. The six-seat, three-row Model Y L starts at ₹61.99 lakh and offers a claimed range of up to 681 km.

Tesla Increases Investment as Expenses Rise

Tesla invested ₹86 crore in its Indian entity during FY26, largely through a contribution of ₹85.91 crore from Tesla International BV.

Cash expenditure on property, plant and equipment and capital work-in-progress rose to ₹62.54 crore from ₹1.16 crore in FY25. Cash and cash equivalents increased to ₹87.82 crore at the end of March, compared with ₹10.28 crore a year earlier.

Operating costs also climbed. Employee benefit expenses more than tripled to ₹43.67 crore, including ₹11.99 crore in share-based compensation. Rent expenses rose to ₹30.32 crore, while advertising and promotion expenditure reached ₹2.16 crore. Total expenses stood at ₹240 crore.

Can Tesla Sustain Its India Profit?

Tesla's FY26 results show that its Indian operations reported a profit while transitioning into vehicle sales. However, one profitable year does not establish whether earnings can be sustained as the business expands.

Rising registrations offer an encouraging sign, but Tesla will need to increase sales volumes and manage operating costs to strengthen its position in India's electric car market.

The company has experience centres in Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad, along with approved body shops in Pune and Ahmedabad.
