US President Donald Trump has publicly defended White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles after a Vanity Fair report quoted her describing him as having an “alcoholic’s personality,” a remark that sparked widespread political and media attention.
Speaking to The New York Post, Trump said the comment was not offensive and, in fact, echoed a description he has used about himself for years. Reiterating that he does not consume alcohol, the US President said he has long believed that drinking could have led him toward alcoholism.
“I’ve said that many times about myself,” Trump told the newspaper. “I’m fortunate I’m not a drinker. If I did, I could very well be.”
Trump strongly criticised the Vanity Fair article, calling it misleading and accusing the reporter of misrepresenting the intent and context of Wiles’ remarks. He suggested that the interviewer had deliberately shaped the narrative to portray his administration negatively.
“From what I hear, the facts were wrong, and it was a very misguided interviewer, purposely misguided,” Trump said, adding that he had not read the full piece and does not follow the magazine.
Despite the controversy, Trump expressed unequivocal support for his chief of staff. When asked whether he continued to trust Wiles, the President responded, “Oh, she’s fantastic,” praising her performance and leadership.
In the Vanity Fair profile, Wiles reportedly characterised Trump as intensely driven and convinced that there is nothing he cannot achieve. She linked the description to her personal experience of growing up with an alcoholic parent, explaining that she recognised similar personality traits in Trump, despite his abstinence from alcohol.
The article also quoted Wiles as saying that Vice President JD Vance had been “a conspiracy theorist for a decade.” Addressing the remark, Vance appeared unfazed and downplayed any suggestion of criticism.
Speaking to reporters in Pennsylvania, Vance said Wiles’ comments were not intended negatively and praised her effectiveness and loyalty. “I only believe in the conspiracy theories that are true,” he said, dismissing the label with humour.
Senior White House officials quickly rallied behind Wiles following the publication of the article. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the President considers Wiles his most loyal adviser and credited her with bringing discipline and unity to the administration.
Attorney General Pam Bondi also voiced her support, describing Wiles as a steadfast leader who works daily to advance the President’s agenda with “grace, loyalty, and historic effectiveness.”
Wiles herself later criticised the Vanity Fair profile, calling it a disingenuous hit piece that selectively removed context to create a negative portrayal of the administration.
A veteran political strategist from Florida, Wiles managed Trump’s 2024 re-election campaign and is widely seen as a central figure in shaping the operational structure and discipline of his second-term White House.
