Air Force One, carrying US President Donald Trump, was forced to turn back shortly after takeoff while en route to the World Economic Forum in Davos, after a technical issue was detected onboard. The aircraft safely returned to Joint Base Andrews, near Washington, prompting brief concern and widespread attention.
According to official confirmation from the White House, the decision to abort the transatlantic journey was taken after the flight crew identified a minor electrical issue. While the administration did not provide extensive technical details, it clarified that the issue was not a security threat and that standard aviation safety protocols were followed.
Despite the unexpected turnaround, Trump’s travel plans to Davos remain unchanged. The US President is expected to continue his journey to Switzerland aboard an alternative aircraft and address the global gathering as scheduled. His speech at the forum is anticipated to touch on major geopolitical and economic themes, including his administration’s controversial plans related to Greenland.
Reports from journalists onboard indicated that shortly after takeoff, lights in the press cabin briefly went out, raising initial concerns. Roughly 30 minutes into the flight, Air Force One reversed course and headed back toward the US East Coast. Flight tracking data circulating on social media appeared to show the aircraft turning back over the Atlantic, while several accompanying military aircraft reportedly adjusted their flight paths before returning as well.
Visuals shared online showed vehicles from the presidential motorcade moving quickly toward the base as the aircraft made its return, further fuelling speculation before the White House clarified the situation.
The aircraft involved is one of two Boeing 747-200 jets, designated VC-25A, that form the current Air Force One fleet. These planes have been in service since 1991 and are among the most secure and technologically advanced aircraft in the world. However, their age has increasingly drawn attention, as they are nearing retirement after more than three decades of operation.
During Trump’s first term, a contract was signed with Boeing to replace the existing fleet with the next-generation VC-25B aircraft. The project, however, has faced repeated delays and cost overruns, pushing back the delivery timeline significantly.
Adding another layer of intrigue, Trump last year accepted a luxury Boeing 747-8 gifted by Qatar, often referred to as a “palace in the sky.” The aircraft is currently undergoing extensive modifications to meet US presidential security standards, a move that sparked political controversy and criticism domestically.
As Air Force One returned to base, the White House press secretary reportedly made a light-hearted remark suggesting that the Qatari jet sounded “much better” at the moment, easing tensions surrounding the incident.
While the episode briefly disrupted Trump’s travel schedule, officials stressed that safety was never compromised and that the President would proceed with his high-profile Davos engagement without delay.
