Directed by Luca Guadagnino, Artificial features Garfield as Altman and presents a fictionalised account of the people and events surrounding the company's internal turmoil.

Artificial revisits OpenAI's dramatic leadership crisis

Artificial is set against the events of November 2023, when Sam Altman was removed from his position as OpenAI CEO following a decision by the company's board.

At the time, OpenAI announced that the board had concluded Altman had not been consistently candid in his communications, affecting its ability to carry out its responsibilities. Mira Murati, then OpenAI's chief technology officer, was appointed interim CEO.

However, the leadership crisis was short-lived. Following intense developments within the company, Altman returned as CEO, while Murati resumed her role as chief technology officer. OpenAI officially confirmed Altman's return later that month.

The film dramatises this period of internal conflict and explores the personalities involved in the rapid transformation of OpenAI into one of the world's most influential artificial intelligence companies.
