Chennai Super Kings have revamped their CSK coaching staff for IPL 2027, appointing former India fast bowler Mohit Sharma as bowling coach and former CSK all-rounder Albie Morkel as assistant coach. The appointments form part of a wider restructuring led by head coach Zaheer Khan as the five-time champions prepare for the upcoming season.

The franchise confirmed Morkel’s appointment shortly after Zaheer indicated that the former South African international could return to the Chennai set-up. Zaheer has been given the responsibility of assembling his coaching team after replacing Stephen Fleming as head coach.

Mohit Sharma Returns to CSK as Bowling Coach

Mohit began his IPL career with CSK in 2013 and represented the franchise until 2015 before returning for another stint in 2019. He later played a key role for Gujarat Titans during their run to the IPL final in 2023.

The 38-year-old finished his IPL career with 120 appearances and 134 wickets. His last IPL appearance came for Delhi Capitals, and he announced his retirement from all forms of cricket in December 2025.

Mohit will replace Eric Simons as CSK’s bowling coach. His experience across multiple IPL teams and familiarity with Chennai could help the franchise strengthen its bowling unit.

Albie Morkel Returns as Zaheer Khan’s Deputy

Morkel played for CSK from 2008 to 2013 and was part of the team during its successful years. He has continued working within the wider Super Kings franchise network and recently became head coach of Joburg Super Kings in South Africa’s SA20 competition.

His appointment reunites the franchise with a former player who understands its culture and structure.

CSK Continue Major Coaching Reshuffle

The franchise has also appointed former England off-spinner Gareth Batty as an assistant coach. Meanwhile, long-serving batting coach Michael Hussey has departed, along with bowling coach Eric Simons and fielding coach James Foster.

The changes come after CSK missed the playoffs for three consecutive seasons. With the player-retention deadline set for November 15, the management must also finalise its squad plans ahead of the auction.

The revamped coaching group signals a fresh direction under Zaheer as CSK aim to return to title contention and pursue a sixth IPL championship.
