The proposed INDIA bloc rally in Delhi on November 1 has drawn opposition from the city's trading community, with the Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI) appealing to opposition leaders to postpone the event until after Diwali.
The traders' body has suggested November 10 or 11 as alternative dates, arguing that a large political gathering during the festive shopping period could disrupt business across central Delhi's major commercial markets.
Traders Warn of Traffic Congestion Ahead of Diwali
According to the CTI, central Delhi markets experience substantial customer footfall in the days leading up to Dhanteras and Diwali. This period is particularly important for traders, as shoppers visit markets to purchase festive goods, clothing, jewellery and other essentials.
The organisation has expressed concern that a major rally at Ramlila Maidan could create significant traffic congestion, affecting customers, shopkeepers and commercial transportation.
The proposed gathering is reportedly expected to attract around one million people, along with thousands of vehicles. Traders believe such a large turnout could make movement across central Delhi extremely difficult during one of the busiest shopping periods of the year.
Rs 10,000–12,000 Crore Business at Stake
The CTI has warned that disruptions could affect business worth approximately Rs 10,000 crore to Rs 12,000 crore across 20 historic markets in the capital.
Among the markets expected to be affected is Chandni Chowk, one of Delhi's major commercial and wholesale trading centres.
Traders argue that even temporary restrictions on road movement and access to commercial areas could discourage customers from visiting markets, potentially affecting sales during the festive season.
November 10 or 11 Suggested as Alternative Dates
Rather than opposing the rally itself, the traders' body has requested that INDIA bloc leaders consider shifting the event to November 10 or 11, after the main Diwali shopping rush.
The appeal seeks to balance the political gathering with the commercial interests of thousands of businesses that depend on festive-season sales.
The proposed rally remains a matter of concern for Delhi's trading community, which has urged political leaders to consider the economic impact of holding a large event in central Delhi during the festive period.
