France have suffered a setback ahead of their FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-final after FIFA rejected the French Football Federation's (FFF) appeal to overturn Michael Olise's yellow card. The decision means the Bayern Munich winger remains one booking away from suspension as Les Bleus prepare to face Morocco.
Head coach Didier Deschamps confirmed the decision during a press conference, saying FIFA had informed the federation that the caution would stand.
Speaking ahead of France's quarter-final clash, Didier Deschamps confirmed that FIFA had decided not to rescind Michael Olise's booking.
"There was no change when it comes to Olise's yellow card. We received FIFA's decision this morning that the yellow card was maintained," Deschamps said.
The ruling leaves France's attacking plans unchanged for the Morocco match but increases the disciplinary risk for later stages of the tournament.
Olise received the yellow card in stoppage time during France's 1-0 Round of 16 victory over Paraguay.
The booking followed an altercation with Paraguay midfielder Matas Galarza in the 97th minute.
French officials argued that television replays showed Olise only grabbing Galarza's shirt and that there was no clear evidence of violent conduct. Despite the appeal and video review, FIFA upheld the referee's original decision.
With the yellow card remaining on record, Olise now enters the Morocco quarter-final under disciplinary pressure.
If he receives another caution, he will automatically miss a potential World Cup semi-final against either Spain or Belgium.
France also have two other players walking the same disciplinary tightrope:
All three must avoid another booking to remain eligible for the semi-finals.
France's appeal came shortly after FIFA made headlines by overturning a disciplinary sanction involving the United States.
US forward Folarin Balogun had originally received a straight red card, but FIFA later suspended the ban following a review, allowing him to feature in the Round of 16.
That decision generated widespread debate and prompted criticism from several football authorities, with questions raised about consistency in FIFA's disciplinary process.
However, FIFA chose not to extend similar relief to France in Olise's case.
Although Michael Olise remains available for the quarter-final, Didier Deschamps will need to balance the winger's attacking influence with the risk of losing him for a potential semi-final.
Against a disciplined Morocco side, avoiding unnecessary bookings could prove just as important as securing qualification.
FIFA decided to uphold the referee's original yellow-card decision issued to Michael Olise during France's Round of 16 match against Paraguay.
Yes. The yellow card does not suspend him from the quarter-final.
Another booking would trigger an automatic one-match suspension, causing him to miss a potential World Cup semi-final.
Bradley Barcola and Manu Koné are also carrying yellow cards and face suspension if booked again.
If France defeat Morocco, they are expected to meet either Spain or Belgium in the semi-finals.
FIFA's decision to reject France's appeal leaves Michael Olise available for the World Cup quarter-final but under significant disciplinary pressure. With a place in the semi-finals at stake, France will hope one of their key attacking players can make the difference while avoiding the booking that could end his tournament run.
