The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has firmly denied allegations that it made payments to or employed convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, following the release of millions of documents by the U.S. Department of Justice related to the disgraced financier’s network of contacts.
In an official statement, the foundation clarified that while a small number of employees interacted with Epstein, no financial collaboration or employment relationship was ever established. According to the organisation, discussions were exploratory and centred around the possibility of mobilising philanthropic funding for global health and development initiatives.
“On the basis of Epstein’s claims that he could mobilise significant philanthropic resources, a limited number of staff members engaged with him,” the foundation said. “Ultimately, no partnership was pursued, no fund was created and no payments were made.”
The foundation further expressed regret over any interaction with Epstein, emphasising that it did not proceed with any formal engagement after preliminary discussions.
The renewed scrutiny comes as newly released DOJ files detail Epstein’s communications with numerous high-profile individuals across business, politics and philanthropy. The documents reveal that Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft and chair of the Gates Foundation, met Epstein multiple times after Epstein’s 2008 conviction related to prostitution offences, including soliciting an underage girl.
According to the documents, the meetings reportedly involved discussions about expanding philanthropic efforts and exploring funding opportunities in global health and development. Photographs included in the files show Gates in settings where Epstein was present, though the foundation has reiterated that the interactions were limited strictly to charitable topics.
Gates has previously acknowledged meeting Epstein and has publicly stated that it was a mistake to engage with him. He has maintained that the discussions were confined to philanthropy-related matters and did not lead to any formal collaboration.
Epstein’s ties to influential figures have remained under intense public and media scrutiny since his arrest in 2019 on federal sex trafficking charges. He was later found dead in a Manhattan jail cell, with authorities ruling his death a suicide. The case continues to generate controversy, particularly regarding the extent of his connections and the level of transparency surrounding investigations.
Analysts note that the Gates Foundation’s swift denial underscores the reputational risks faced by global institutions associated, even indirectly, with Epstein. As more documents become public, organisations linked to him are expected to face heightened examination regarding past interactions.
The foundation has reaffirmed its commitment to global health and development initiatives and stated that it has implemented strict governance and ethical oversight measures to ensure transparency in its operations. With the DOJ’s document release continuing to reveal details about Epstein’s extensive network, the spotlight remains on institutions and individuals who had any form of contact with him.
