Indore’s Devi Ahilya University Expels Student from Hostel After Misconduct Inquiry

A first-year student of Devi Ahilya University in Indore has been expelled from a university hostel following multiple complaints from fellow residents alleging inappropriate conduct within hostel premises.

University officials confirmed that action was taken after written complaints were submitted by students residing in the hostel. The complaints reportedly alleged that the student engaged in objectionable behaviour inside her hostel room during video calls and used inappropriate material in the presence of other residents.

According to authorities, the matter first came to light when a first-year hostel resident submitted a formal written complaint. Following this, at least four other students came forward with similar allegations. Some complaints also claimed that the student was encouraging fellow residents to connect with unknown individuals through a mobile application.

Internal Inquiry Conducted

Vice-Chancellor Rakesh Singhai stated that the university constituted an internal inquiry committee to examine the allegations in detail. The committee reviewed written complaints and gathered statements from concerned hostel residents.

During the investigation process, the hostel warden reportedly conducted a search of the student’s room. Officials said certain items were recovered during the inspection, which were considered inappropriate under hostel conduct guidelines.

After reviewing the findings, university authorities concluded that the student’s continued stay in the hostel could potentially disturb the environment for other residents. Based on the inquiry report, the administration decided to expel the student from the hostel with immediate effect.

University’s Stand on Hostel Discipline

University officials emphasised that hostels are shared living spaces and that maintaining discipline, safety, and mutual respect among residents is essential. They reiterated that any complaints regarding misconduct are addressed through due process, including written submissions and internal review.

The action pertains specifically to hostel accommodation and does not automatically imply expulsion from academic programmes unless separately decided under university regulations.

Founded in 1964 by the state government, Devi Ahilya University is one of the prominent higher education institutions in Madhya Pradesh, with nearly 200 affiliated colleges.

Focus on Student Safety

Authorities stated that ensuring a safe and comfortable environment for all hostel residents remains a priority. They have also urged students to report concerns through official channels rather than circulating unverified information.

The incident highlights the importance of clear conduct guidelines within university campuses and the role of internal grievance mechanisms in addressing student concerns.

Further details regarding academic status or additional disciplinary measures have not been disclosed.
