The Indian Navy has inducted INS Malwan, a state-of-the-art anti-submarine warfare shallow water craft (ASW SWC), marking a significant step in enhancing India’s coastal defence capabilities. The vessel was formally received as part of a broader initiative to strengthen maritime security and underwater surveillance.
INS Malwan is the second ship in a planned series of eight such vessels aimed at safeguarding India’s vast coastline and strategic waters.
The warship has been designed and constructed by Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) in Kochi, showcasing India’s growing strength in indigenous defence manufacturing. Notably, the vessel features over 80% indigenous content, reflecting the success of the government’s push towards self-reliance.
The project has also seen active participation from domestic industries, including Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), highlighting the role of local manufacturing in national defence projects.
INS Malwan is equipped with specialised systems for detecting and neutralising underwater threats, particularly submarines operating in shallow waters. These capabilities are critical for maintaining security in coastal regions and preventing potential maritime threats.
The vessel has been developed in accordance with the operational requirements of the Indian Navy and meets global classification standards set by DNV, a Norway-based maritime certification authority.
The induction of INS Malwan is part of a larger plan to build a fleet of eight ASW SWC vessels. These ships are designed to enhance the Navy’s operational readiness and strengthen surveillance across India’s maritime zones.
With increasing geopolitical tensions and evolving security challenges in the Indian Ocean region, such additions are crucial for maintaining strategic balance and preparedness.
The vessel has been named after Malwan, a coastal town with historical significance linked to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, known for his naval strength and maritime vision.
The naming reflects India’s rich maritime heritage and honours the legacy of one of the country’s greatest warrior kings, who laid the foundation for a strong naval presence in Indian waters.
INS Malwan stands as a testament to India’s progress in defence self-reliance under initiatives like ‘Make in India’. The successful construction and induction of such advanced vessels underline the country’s capability to design and manufacture complex military platforms domestically.
As India continues to invest in modernising its armed forces, indigenous projects like INS Malwan are expected to play a crucial role in shaping the future of national security.
