JNU Campus Clash: Left Groups, ABVP Trade Allegations After Violence

Clashes broke out inside Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in the early hours of Monday after student protests escalated into violence. Rival student organisations have accused each other of assaults and intimidation, while several students were reportedly injured during the confrontation.

The unrest followed nearly a week-long strike led by Left-affiliated student groups protesting remarks attributed to the university’s vice chancellor.

Protest Against VC Remarks Turns Violent

According to the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU), student groups organised a protest on campus when tensions suddenly escalated. Protesters alleged that stones were thrown at demonstrators, resulting in injuries.

Left-affiliated organisations blamed members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) for disrupting what they described as a peaceful protest. The sequence of events and injury claims have not been independently verified.

ABVP Rejects Allegations, Claims Students Were Attacked

ABVP denied the accusations and alleged that Left groups carried out coordinated attacks across the campus. The organisation claimed that a biotechnology student was assaulted inside the School of Social Sciences premises after being sprayed with fire extinguisher powder and beaten.

ABVP also alleged that a gas cylinder was opened during the incident and that the injured student was taken to hospital in serious condition.

Claims of Campus-Wide Intimidation

ABVP representatives alleged that large masked groups moved across academic buildings and libraries, forcing students out of study spaces. They claimed multiple students were chased and attacked during the night.

Describing the situation as a “night of terror,” the group alleged that law enforcement failed to intervene despite escalating tensions.

Social Media Campaigns and Demand for Action

The incident triggered online campaigns and political reactions, with demands for strict action against those responsible. Student groups have called for accountability and enhanced campus security.

Authorities have yet to issue a detailed statement. Police are expected to examine complaints from both sides as tensions remain high.

Campus Situation Remains Tense

Students reported that the atmosphere on campus remains tense following the clashes. The administration is expected to review security arrangements and engage with student bodies to restore normalcy.

The incident highlights ongoing political polarisation within campuses and raises concerns over student safety and the management of protests in educational institutions.
