The ongoing Budget Session of Parliament is witnessing heightened political tension as a proposed motion to remove Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla may be taken up for discussion on March 9, according to parliamentary sources. The development comes amid escalating exchanges between the ruling alliance and Opposition parties over allegations of bias and restrictions on debate inside the House.
Proceedings in the Lok Sabha began on Wednesday with Question Hour under the chairmanship of BJP MP P.C. Mohan, while discussions on the Union Budget continued following an opening speech by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor. The day is expected to remain politically charged, with Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman scheduled to reply to the Budget debate and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi likely to address the House later in the day.
Opposition leaders have intensified criticism of the Speaker’s conduct, claiming that parliamentary norms have been compromised. Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi alleged that a no-confidence motion against the Speaker had been initiated due to perceived bias and restrictions on the Opposition’s right to speak. Senior Congress leader Harish Rawat also questioned the neutrality of the Chair, emphasising that parliamentary democracy depends on trust from both sides of the political spectrum.
Sources indicate that the discussion on the motion to remove the Speaker could take place on the first day of the second phase of the Budget Session, marking a potentially historic moment if it proceeds. The Opposition is expected to focus on issues such as floor management, speech restrictions, and the handling of recent controversies, including debates linked to former Army chief memoir discussions.
Outside Parliament, political strategist Prashant Kishor publicly supported Rahul Gandhi’s right to speak, arguing that restricting the Leader of Opposition could undermine democratic debate. His comments have added another layer to the political narrative surrounding the session.
Meanwhile, Rajya Sabha proceedings are set to continue with discussions on various policy issues, including sanitation workers’ concerns raised through a Zero Hour notice by AAP MP Sanjay Singh. The Upper House is also scheduled to hear the Finance Minister’s reply to the Budget debate later this week.
Political analysts say the developments highlight a deepening divide between the treasury benches and Opposition parties as key legislative discussions unfold. With debates over fiscal policy, international trade agreements, and parliamentary conduct running simultaneously, the Budget Session is shaping up to be one of the most contentious in recent years.
As March 9 approaches, attention will remain focused on whether the proposed motion against the Speaker gains sufficient support and how it could influence the broader political climate within Parliament. The coming weeks are expected to see intensified debate, strategic positioning, and further exchanges as both sides prepare for crucial legislative and political battles.
