BNP Thanks PM Modi as Khaleda Zia Battles Critical Illness in Dhaka Hospital

Bangladesh’s main opposition party, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), on Tuesday expressed sincere gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for sending a message wishing the swift recovery of party chief and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, who remains in critical condition at Dhaka’s Evercare Hospital.

PM Modi posted on X, saying he was “deeply concerned” about the health of the 80-year-old leader who has played a significant role in Bangladesh’s public life for decades. “Our sincere prayers and best wishes for her speedy recovery. India stands ready to extend all possible support,” he said.

Responding on X, the BNP thanked PM Modi for his “gesture of goodwill” and acknowledged India’s readiness to provide assistance at a time when Zia’s health has sharply deteriorated.

Khaleda Zia’s Condition Remains Critical

Khaleda Zia was admitted to Evercare Hospital on November 23 with a lung infection that rapidly worsened. She has since been moved to the Coronary Care Unit and placed on ventilation support. Her treatment is currently being supervised by a medical board comprising Bangladeshi and foreign specialists.

BNP leaders say her condition remains “unchanged and extremely critical.”
Vice-Chairman Ahmed Aazam Khan noted that doctors have “exhausted most medical options,” adding that the only thing left is to seek prayers from the nation. Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir echoed the severity of her condition, stating that specialists are working continuously but improvement has not been observed.

Khaleda Zia has long suffered from multiple chronic illnesses, including liver, kidney, and cardiovascular complications, along with diabetes and arthritis. She recently returned to Dhaka on May 6 after four months of treatment in London.
