IIT Admissions 2026: 16 of 23 IITs Allotted More Seats Than Listed Capacity

The final JoSAA 2026 round allotted 18,861 IIT seats against a listed capacity of 18,826, with 16 of the 23 institutes recording marginally higher allotments.

IIT admissions 2026 saw 18,861 seats allotted across the 23 Indian Institutes of Technology, exceeding the listed overall capacity of 18,826 by 35 seats. According to the Joint Implementation Committee (JIC) report on JEE Advanced 2026, the difference was recorded across 16 IITs in the final, fifth round of the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) process.

The excess was relatively small at most institutes. IIT (ISM) Dhanbad recorded the largest difference, with 1,215 seats allotted against a listed capacity of 1,210, or five additional seats.

IIT Madras and IIT Roorkee each recorded four more allotments than their listed capacities. IIT Madras allotted 1,122 seats against 1,118, while IIT Roorkee allotted 1,357 against 1,353.

IIT Bombay and IIT Kharagpur each recorded three additional allotments, with 1,366 and 1,952 seats allotted respectively.

Several other institutes also recorded smaller differences. IIT Bhubaneswar allotted 504 seats against 502, while IIT Delhi allotted 1,251 against 1,249. IIT Patna allotted 820 against a capacity of 817, and IIT Ropar allotted 698 against 696.

The JIC report also recorded no difference between listed capacity and allotments at IIT Indore, IIT Jodhpur, IIT Goa, IIT Palakkad, IIT Tirupati, IIT Jammu and IIT Dharwad.

Overall, the listed capacity was 18,826 seats, while the final allotment stood at 18,861.

Women Account for 20.22% of IIT Allotments

The 2026 report also highlights female participation in IIT admissions. A total of 3,814 female candidates secured IIT seats, representing 20.22% of all allotments.

The overall capacity included 3,776 female-only supernumerary seats. In the final round, 3,776 women entered through these seats, while another 37 female candidates secured seats through the gender-neutral pool.

Among individual institutes, IIT Tirupati recorded the highest female share at 21.26%, followed by IIT Madras at 21.12%, IIT Dharwad at 20.85%, IIT Bhubaneswar at 20.83% and IIT Hyderabad at 20.82%.

The JEE Advanced 2026 report recorded 1,87,389 registered candidates, with 1,79,694 appearing in both papers and 56,880 qualifying.
