Imran Khan Undergoes Eye Treatment Amid Vision Loss Concerns

Former Pakistan Prime minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan was shifted from Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail to Islamabad’s Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) under heavy security on Tuesday for urgent eye treatment, officials confirmed.

The 73-year-old leader was transported in a heavily guarded convoy comprising multiple vehicles, signal jammers, and security personnel. The high-security movement reflects Khan’s political sensitivity and the volatile environment surrounding his detention.

Specialised retinal treatment performed

At PIMS, doctors administered a second intravitreal anti-VEGF injection, a specialised procedure used to treat retinal diseases and preserve vision. The treatment is commonly used to manage conditions that can cause progressive vision loss.

Before the ophthalmic procedure, a medical board conducted a comprehensive evaluation, including cardiology and internal medicine assessments. Hospital officials confirmed that Khan’s cardiac tests were normal and he was clinically stable.

The procedure was carried out as day-care surgery by retinal specialists from PIMS and Al-Shifa Eye Hospital. Officials stated that Khan remained stable throughout the treatment and was returned to Adiala Jail the same day with follow-up care instructions.

Vision loss claims intensify health concerns

Khan’s health has become a major political flashpoint in Pakistan. Earlier this month, his son Kasim Khan alleged that prolonged solitary confinement and inadequate medical care had severely affected his father’s eyesight. According to family claims, he has lost most of the vision in his right eye, with reports suggesting only limited sight remains.

Leaders of PTI and family members have accused authorities of neglect and mistreatment. Government officials, however, maintain that Khan is receiving appropriate medical care while in custody.

Political and public reactions

The former prime minister has been jailed since August 2023 following convictions in corruption-related cases. Khan and his party describe the cases as politically motivated, an allegation authorities reject.

Concerns about his health have sparked protests by PTI supporters and renewed calls for humane treatment of political detainees.

Several prominent former cricketers have also appealed for proper medical care for the former Pakistan captain, highlighting his global stature and contributions to the sport.

Health issue adds to political tensions

Khan’s medical condition continues to draw attention amid Pakistan’s charged political climate. Observers note that his health status has become intertwined with broader debates on governance, political rights, and judicial processes in the country.

While officials say he remains stable following treatment, further medical monitoring is expected as part of ongoing care.
