India has secured the 16th position globally in the newly released Responsible Nations Index (RNI), ranking ahead of the United States and China, in a framework that evaluates how responsibly countries use power at home, towards the environment, and in the global system.
The index, unveiled this week, assesses 154 countries and places Singapore at the top, followed by Switzerland and Denmark. India’s placement in the top 20 marks a significant recognition of its governance outcomes, social responsibility, and international conduct under a metric that moves beyond traditional measures of economic or military power.
The Responsible Nations Index is an initiative of the World Intellectual Foundation and is the outcome of a three-year academic and policy exercise. Unlike conventional global rankings that prioritise GDP size, defence strength or geopolitical influence, the RNI places responsibility at the centre of national evaluation.
The index is built on the premise that power without responsibility is unsustainable, and that long-term national success must be judged by how ethically, fairly and sustainably power is exercised.
Speaking at the launch, former President Ram Nath Kovind said the framework offers a clear and timely definition of what it means to be a responsible nation. He described the index as an important step for future generations, highlighting its focus on both domestic responsibility and global accountability.
The RNI evaluates countries across three core pillars:
Internal Responsibility: A nation’s commitment to the dignity, welfare and empowerment of its citizens
Environmental Responsibility: Policies and outcomes related to sustainability, ecological protection and climate action
External Responsibility: Behaviour within the international system, including peace, cooperation and economic engagement
These pillars are further broken down into seven dimensions, covering quality of life, governance, social justice, economic performance, environmental stewardship, commitment to peace, and international economic relations.
In total, the index uses 58 indicators, drawing from globally recognised data sources such as the World Bank, United Nations agencies, IMF, WHO, FAO, ILO and the World Justice Project, using the latest comparable data available up to 2023.
India’s 16th position places it ahead of several advanced economies, including Italy and France, and notably above major powers such as the US and China. The ranking reflects India’s performance across governance delivery, social inclusion, environmental efforts, and responsible participation in the global system.
The RNI findings underline that responsibility is not determined by economic size alone, but by institutional quality, policy intent and ethical governance. The report also notes that several emerging economies, including India, perform strongly in areas such as peacekeeping, renewable energy adoption and inclusive welfare delivery.
According to the RNI rankings, northern and eastern European countries dominate the top positions, largely due to strong rule of law, inclusive welfare systems and sustained climate commitments. At the same time, the index highlights that responsibility-driven outcomes are achievable across diverse economic contexts.
By shifting the global lens from power to responsibility, the Responsible Nations Index aims to reshape how national progress and leadership are understood. It presents responsibility as a measurable concept, offering policymakers, researchers and citizens a new framework to evaluate how nations contribute to peace, prosperity and sustainability in an increasingly interconnected world.
