External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar is set to formally launch India's campaign for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2028-29 term during his visit to New York on Monday, marking another significant step in New Delhi's efforts to expand its global diplomatic influence.
The visit will also include a meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, as India continues to advocate for comprehensive reforms of the UN's most powerful body.
Jaishankar's campaign launch at the UN headquarters comes ahead of elections for the 2028-29 Security Council term, scheduled to take place in June 2027.
India will contest the sole Asia-Pacific Group seat against Tajikistan.
Having previously served as a non-permanent member during 2021-22, India is seeking another term while simultaneously intensifying its demand for permanent representation on the Security Council.
Following the campaign launch, Jaishankar is expected to hold discussions with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
The meeting comes at a time of heightened geopolitical tensions, including:
India is expected to highlight its vision for strengthening multilateral cooperation and improving global governance.
India has consistently argued that the current Security Council structure no longer reflects modern geopolitical realities.
New Delhi has repeatedly called for:
India maintains that expanding only non-permanent seats would fail to address the imbalance of power among the five permanent members.
For its 2028-29 candidature, India has adopted the campaign message:
"#India4UNSC 2028-29: Peace, Planet, Progress."
The slogan reflects India's emphasis on sustainable development, global peace and inclusive growth while seeking broader international support.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently renewed India's call for Security Council reforms during his address to the Indonesian Parliament.
He said the rapidly evolving global order requires greater participation from developing countries and stressed that reforms to the UN Security Council can no longer be delayed.
India argues that today's geopolitical landscape differs significantly from 1945, when the Security Council was established, making institutional reforms essential.
After completing his engagements in New York, Jaishankar will travel to Brussels to attend the third India-European Union Trade and Technology Council meeting.
The visit will also include bilateral meetings with European Union and Belgian leaders on July 14 and 15, focusing on trade, technology and strategic cooperation.

India will contest the Asia-Pacific seat in the 2027 elections while continuing to push for comprehensive reforms and permanent representation on the UN Security Council.
India's latest UN Security Council campaign reflects more than its bid for another non-permanent seat—it reinforces the country's broader ambition to play a larger role in global governance. As geopolitical challenges continue to reshape international relations, New Delhi is using the campaign to strengthen support for long-pending UN reforms while presenting itself as a responsible and influential global partner.
