PM Modi Attends G20 Summit in Johannesburg Amid US-SA Rift

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Johannesburg for the 20th G20 Leaders Summit, hosted by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. The summit, themed “Solidarity, Equality and Sustainability,” holds special significance as it comes shortly after the African Union’s inclusion as a permanent G20 member, marking a major shift in global representation.

However, the meeting has been overshadowed by diplomatic friction between the United States and South Africa. President Ramaphosa confirmed that Washington had sent a notice indicating a possible “change of mind” regarding its participation in the summit — a move still under discussion.

“We have received notice from the United States… about a change of mind, about participating in one shape or form,” Ramaphosa said.

Shortly after, the White House denied any reversal of its previously announced decision to boycott the summit, further intensifying the diplomatic uncertainty.

This Johannesburg summit is also notable for being the fourth consecutive G20 gathering hosted by a Global South nation, underscoring shifting geopolitical priorities and the growing voice of emerging economies.
