Pope Leo’s Cancer Diagnosis Called a ‘Gamechanger’ for His ‘Superman’ Image by Vatican Official

Archbishop Paul Gallagher says Pope Leo’s lung cancer diagnosis has changed perceptions of his health, as the pontiff resumes duties and prepares for a South America tour.

Pope Leo resumes public duties after lung cancer surgery as the Vatican prepares for his upcoming South America tour.

Pope Leo’s cancer diagnosis and subsequent surgery have changed how Catholics view his health and papacy, with Vatican foreign minister Archbishop Paul Gallagher describing the development as a “gamechanger”.

Speaking to journalists in Rome on Tuesday, Gallagher said some Catholics had viewed the 71-year-old pontiff as a “Superman” because of his relatively young age and physical fitness. The illness, he suggested, had reminded people that the pope was human and vulnerable like everyone else.

“I think that is going to change how we see him and possibly how he sees himself as well,” Gallagher said.

Leo was diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma and underwent surgery on October 13 to remove the lower lobe of his right lung. According to his doctors, the cancer was localised and had not spread, meaning further treatment would not be required.

The pontiff returned to the Vatican on October 18 and has gradually resumed his public schedule. His recent appearances have shown him speaking clearly and appearing energetic at public engagements.

Pope Leo to Visit South America in November

The Vatican has confirmed that Leo will proceed with a three-country South America tour from November 6 to 17. The trip is among the most intensive foreign visits planned for a pope in decades.

The decision to travel less than a month after surgery raised questions about the pontiff’s recovery. Gallagher said medical advice had been positive and that Leo felt fit enough to undertake the journey.

He added that the pope wanted to make the visit, which had been planned for some time.

Vatican Says It Did Not Arrange Ukraine Ceasefire

Gallagher also addressed a ceasefire reportedly agreed by Russia and Ukraine to allow humanitarian aid into Oleshky, a Ukrainian town under Russian control.

Although Leo has recently spoken with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Gallagher said he did not believe the Vatican had helped arrange the ceasefire.

The archbishop also discussed the Vatican’s agreement with China on appointing Catholic bishops. First signed in 2018, the arrangement gives Chinese officials a role in the appointment process.

Gallagher acknowledged shortcomings but said the Vatican remained committed to dialogue with Beijing.

Pope Leo Could Visit the United States

Gallagher said he expected Leo, the first US-born pope, to visit the United States in the “not too distant future”. However, he cautioned that the visit might not happen in 2027, depending on the pontiff’s schedule.

The pope’s recovery, upcoming international travel and diplomatic engagements are likely to remain closely watched as he continues his duties.
