The Women’s Open Air Jail in Patiala was inaugurated by Punjab Jail Minister Ravjot Singh at Central Jail Patiala on Wednesday, October 28, during the Ujala Punjab Prison Olympics 2026.

The initiative is aimed at promoting physical fitness, positive thinking and the rehabilitation of inmates. The inauguration took place alongside sporting and cultural activities organised as part of the prison Olympics.

The event featured competitions such as tug-of-war and kabaddi, while cultural performances of Giddha and Bhangra added a Punjabi touch to the programme. Ravjot Singh also participated in activities organised during the event.

Punjab Government Highlights Rehabilitation Through Sports

Addressing the gathering, Ravjot Singh said the Bhagwant Mann-led Punjab government was encouraging sports, fitness and cultural activities inside prisons to help inmates develop a positive mindset.

He highlighted the role such initiatives can play in preparing prisoners to reintegrate into mainstream society after their release.

Sports and cultural programmes can provide opportunities for participation, teamwork and discipline within correctional settings. The initiative reflects an approach that places emphasis not only on incarceration but also on the personal development and rehabilitation of inmates.

The inauguration of the Women’s Open Air Jail adds to the state’s prison-related initiatives showcased during the Ujala Punjab Prison Olympics 2026.

Prison Olympics Combine Sports and Cultural Activities

The Ujala Punjab Prison Olympics 2026 brought together sporting competitions and cultural performances, creating opportunities for inmates to participate in organised activities.

Kabaddi and tug-of-war formed part of the sporting programme, while Giddha and Bhangra highlighted Punjab’s cultural traditions.

According to the minister’s remarks, the broader objective of such programmes is to encourage healthier routines and constructive engagement among prisoners, supporting their eventual return to society.

Further details about the Women’s Open Air Jail’s operating arrangements, eligibility criteria for inmates or its specific facilities were not provided in the initial announcement.
