The Regena Cassandra Kesari 2 controversy has brought renewed attention to discussions around regional bias, female representation and promotional practices in the Indian film industry.
The actor has criticised attempts to frame conversations about the objectification of women in cinema as a North-South issue. She was responding to remarks by Janhvi Kapoor and Radhika Apte about their experiences in Telugu films.
Regena argued that actors have the freedom to refuse roles or leave projects if they feel uncomfortable with the portrayal of their characters.
However, she also questioned why discussions about such experiences were being linked to regional identities rather than addressed as broader industry concerns.
Speaking about the issue, she said she had not watched the relevant episode of Koffee With Karan but objected to generalisations about South Indian cinema.
Actor Alleges Dharma Productions Did Not Promote Her
Regena also raised allegations about her experience during the promotional campaign for Kesari Chapter 2, accusing Karan Johar and Dharma Productions of sidelining her despite her prominent role in the film.
She claimed that her name was missing from promotional material and that she was not tagged in social media posts for a song featuring her.
"The same Karan Johar, in a Dharma Productions film that I have done, called Kesari 2, decided not to promote me in the film. What am I supposed to call this? Is this because I'm a South Indian? I wasn't given a reason. Why wasn't my name added?" she said.
The actor also spoke about facing prejudice while working in the Hindi film industry.
"I faced a lot of stigma when I acted in the North. I face stigma because I'm a South Indian actress. My Hindi is good, and I can act," she added.
These are Regena's allegations, and no response from Karan Johar or Dharma Productions was included in the available report.
Regena Discusses Objectification and Actors' Agency
The actor also addressed comments by Janhvi Kapoor about the Telugu film Peddi and Radhika Apte's remarks concerning working opposite an older male actor.
Regena maintained that actors should be able to exercise their agency when deciding whether to accept or continue with projects that make them uncomfortable.
She further argued that actresses being cast in objectified roles or paired with older male actors was not limited to any one region of Indian cinema.
Her comments have brought together two wider conversations within the film industry: the treatment of female performers and the challenges faced by actors working across regional film industries.
Regena Cassandra's Upcoming Film
Regena will next appear in Mookuthi Amman 2, starring Nayanthara. The film is a sequel to the 2020 Tamil devotional comedy Mookuthi Amman, which featured Nayanthara in the titular role.
The sequel is directed by Sundar C and produced by Ishari K Ganesh.
Her remarks about Kesari Chapter 2 have added another dimension to the ongoing discussion about recognition, representation and professional treatment within India's film industry.
