Assam Merges Over 2,900 Government Schools in Five Years to Improve Resource Efficiency

The Assam government has merged more than 2,900 government schools over the last five years to improve resource utilisation and streamline academic administration, according to information shared in the Lok Sabha on Monday.

Minister of State for Education Jayant Chaudhary clarified that no government or provincialised schools have been shut down during this period. Instead, 2,774 elementary schools and 206 secondary schools were consolidated with nearby institutions under the Shiksha Khetra Scheme.

The move, he explained, was based on a detailed assessment of factors such as low student enrolment, multiple schools functioning on the same campus, and the need to optimise existing infrastructure and teaching personnel. Chaudhary emphasised that all restructuring strictly adhered to Right to Education (RTE) Act, 2009 distance norms.

The Education Ministry stated that rationalisation has allowed better deployment of teachers, improved academic management, and helped reduce dropout rates—without affecting access to education. All students from merged schools continue to receive schooling within the prescribed distance, ensuring uninterrupted learning.

Officials said the initiative reflects Assam’s broader strategy to improve efficiency in the public education system while maintaining full educational accessibility across the state.
