BSF on High Alert at Attari–Wagah Border Amid Dense Fog and New Year Threats

The Border Security Force has been placed on high alert along the Attari–Wagah international border in Punjab as dense fog reduced visibility to near zero, heightening security concerns ahead of New Year celebrations.

Security officials said the force is maintaining enhanced vigilance amid threats of infiltration attempts and weapon-dropping drones from across the border. The challenging weather conditions have compounded operational risks, with thick fog significantly limiting visibility across vast stretches of the border.

The alert follows heightened security measures after recent counter-infiltration operations, prompting authorities to sound a red alert across Punjab and parts of Jammu and Kashmir. Officials said the move is aimed at preventing any attempt to exploit weather conditions and holiday crowds.

Despite freezing temperatures and near-blind visibility, BSF personnel continue round-the-clock monitoring using a combination of advanced surveillance equipment and intensive foot patrols. Thermal sensors, night-vision devices and ground-based monitoring systems are being used to detect suspicious movement along the international boundary.

Security officials emphasised that foggy conditions are often exploited by hostile elements to attempt border breaches or aerial drops of weapons and narcotics. As a precaution, coordination with local intelligence agencies has been intensified, and rapid response teams have been kept on standby.

Authorities said the situation is being closely monitored and that security arrangements will remain tight through the New Year period to ensure the safety and integrity of the border.
