Diwali celebrations in New York brought Indian culture, music and cuisine to the global spotlight, with thousands gathering at Times Square and other venues to celebrate the festival of lights. The events highlighted the diversity of Indian traditions and the cultural ties connecting India and the United States.
The 2026 edition of Diwali at Times Square featured a Diwali Bazaar, a diya-lighting ceremony, a virtual countdown at the One Times Square Ball Drop Tower and the Light Up Times Square Concert. Performers included American rapper and songwriter Raja Kumari, singer Kanika Kapoor and other artists.
India's Consul General in New York, Binaya Pradhan, joined members of the Indian-American community and other Americans at the celebrations.
The Indian Consulate described the festivities as a celebration of peace, hope and harmony, emphasising the people-to-people connections that bring India and the United States closer.
Times Square Becomes a Hub for Diwali Celebrations
Neeta Bhasin, founder and organiser of Diwali at Times Square and a member of the New York State Asian American and Pacific Islanders Commission, said the event aimed to promote unity while showcasing India's art, culture and diversity.
Since its launch in 2013, Diwali at Times Square has provided a platform for celebrating Indian heritage at one of New York's most recognisable public spaces. Organisers say the annual gathering brings the festival's message of peace and harmony to the city's international audience.
Sibu Nair, director of Asian American Affairs for New York Governor Kathy Hochul, also attended the event. He described it as an opportunity to celebrate Diwali with community members who had travelled from across New York State to share their traditions, food and music.
Indian Cuisine Takes Centre Stage at The Pierre
Diwali festivities extended beyond Times Square, with The Pierre, A Taj Hotel, hosting an event attended by prominent members of the Indian-American and international communities.
The hotel collaborated with three New York restaurants, Chatti, Junoon and Musaafer, to present a specially curated Culinary Journey Through India. The experience showcased regional flavours and the country's diverse culinary traditions.
The food showcase complemented the cultural performances and community gatherings taking place across the city, giving attendees an opportunity to experience different aspects of Indian heritage.
Celebrating India's Cultural Diversity Abroad
From music and traditional rituals to regional cuisine, New York's Diwali celebrations brought Indian and South Asian communities together while welcoming a wider American audience.
The festivities underscored the role of cultural events in strengthening diaspora connections and promoting understanding between communities. By combining traditional celebrations with contemporary performances, Diwali at Times Square continued to showcase India's cultural diversity on an international stage.
