IIT Delhi Alumni Impact: Over 270 IAS Officers and 4.8 Lakh Jobs Created

As Indian Institute of Technology Delhi marks 65 years since its establishment, its newly released Alumni Impact Report 2026 highlights a legacy that goes far beyond engineering classrooms. The report reveals how IIT Delhi alumni have played a transformative role in India’s governance, public institutions, global academia, entrepreneurship, and industry leadership, shaping economic growth and public policy at scale.

Founded in 1961, IIT Delhi has evolved into one of India’s most influential academic institutions, with alumni contributing not only to technology and innovation but also to nation-building and global research ecosystems. From senior civil servants and defence specialists to unicorn founders and global technology leaders, the institute’s graduates continue to leave a significant imprint across sectors.

Strong Footprint in Civil Services and Public Institutions

According to the report, more than 650 IIT Delhi alumni are currently serving in public institutions, reflecting the institute’s growing influence in governance and administration. This includes over 270 officers in the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and more than 100 officers across the IPS, IRS, and IFS, demonstrating IIT Delhi’s presence at the highest levels of public decision-making.

Beyond civil services, around 250 alumni hold leadership roles in public sector undertakings, regulatory bodies, and national scientific missions. The institute has also played a strategic role in defence capacity-building, with its Naval Construction Wing having trained over 700 officers for the Indian Navy, strengthening India’s maritime and strategic capabilities.

Global Academic and Research Leadership

IIT Delhi’s impact is equally visible in global academia. The Alumni Impact Report notes that over 50 alumni are faculty members at QS Top 100 universities worldwide, while more than 300 alumni teach across IITs in India. This extensive academic footprint underscores the institute’s role in advancing research, innovation, and higher education both nationally and internationally.

Through these roles, IIT Delhi graduates continue to contribute to cutting-edge research, mentor future scientists, and shape global academic discourse across disciplines.

Entrepreneurship and Job Creation at Scale

Entrepreneurship remains one of IIT Delhi’s most visible legacies. The report highlights that over 2,500 founders and co-founders from the institute have helped build India’s startup and unicorn ecosystem, collectively generating an estimated 4.8 lakh direct jobs.

IIT Delhi alumni have founded or co-founded some of India’s most influential digital-era companies, including Eternal (parent of Zomato and Blinkit), Flipkart, Meesho, and Groww. On the global stage, alumni-led ventures in artificial intelligence, enterprise software, fintech, and deep tech continue to attract international investment and redefine innovation.

The report also acknowledges the role of IIT Delhi alumni in global venture capital and industry leadership, with graduates shaping investment flows, scaling enterprises, and mentoring next-generation founders across continents.

Leadership Across Industry and Finance

Approximately 10,000 IIT Delhi alumni currently occupy leadership positions across banking, finance, manufacturing, and engineering sectors. Nearly 70 per cent of these leaders are based in India, reflecting the institute’s continued contribution to domestic industry, while more than 1,000 alumni serve on corporate boards, influencing governance and long-term strategy in major organisations.

A key highlight of the report is the success of the IIT Delhi Endowment Fund, built entirely through alumni contributions. The fund has secured Rs 477 crore in pledges, with Rs 338 crore already realised, enabling the institute to invest independently in research, faculty development, and infrastructure.

During their silver jubilee reunion in December 2025, the Class of 2000 pledged over Rs 70 crore, underscoring strong alumni commitment to IIT Delhi’s future.

A Growing Global Network

From just 150 alumni in 1966 to more than 65,000 today, IIT Delhi’s alumni network has expanded into a powerful global community. The Alumni Impact Report 2026 reaffirms the institute’s role as a cornerstone of India’s technological, administrative, and entrepreneurial progress.

As IIT Delhi celebrates 65 years, its alumni continue to shape governance, innovation, academia, and industry—demonstrating that the institute produces not just engineers, but leaders driving India’s future in a rapidly evolving global knowledge economy.
