India-Russia Ties: $100 Billion Trade Target, Maritime Security and BRICS

India and Russia are continuing to deepen their bilateral partnership across several strategic sectors, including energy, nuclear power, trade and space technology. The two countries have also set an ambitious target of taking bilateral trade to $100 billion by 2030.

Ahead of the BRICS Summit, discussions between the two sides are focusing not only on economic cooperation but also on important geopolitical and maritime security concerns. The safety of seafarers operating in conflict-affected regions has emerged as a key issue, particularly in areas such as the Black Sea and the Strait of Hormuz.

Growing security concerns around major maritime chokepoints are also posing risks to global trade and energy supplies. The Bab-el-Mandeb Strait, Gulf of Aden and Suez Canal remain strategically important routes for international commerce, making instability in these regions a concern for countries dependent on uninterrupted shipping and energy flows.

India and Russia’s expanding relationship comes at a time when the global economic landscape is undergoing significant changes. Several regions of the Global South, particularly South Asia, Southeast Asia and Africa, are witnessing the emergence of new centres of economic and strategic influence.

Regional conflicts and disruptions to major trade routes have further highlighted the importance of resilient supply chains and secure international waterways. Ensuring the safety of commercial shipping and maintaining open sea lanes of communication remain critical for global economic stability.

Against this backdrop, diplomatic engagement between countries is increasingly focused on dialogue and peaceful solutions to regional disputes. Cooperation on maritime security, trade, energy and other strategic sectors is expected to remain important as India and Russia work towards strengthening their long-term partnership.

The BRICS Summit provides another platform for discussions on these issues, with economic cooperation and broader geopolitical developments likely to shape conversations among participating countries.
