Iranian President Pezeshkian Heads to BRICS Summit, Meets PM Modi Today

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has left Tehran to attend the BRICS Summit, with his visit also set to include a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The meeting between the two leaders is scheduled for 6:15 PM on Friday and is expected to focus on the situation in West Asia.

During the bilateral discussion, Prime Minister Modi is expected to reiterate India’s call for peace in West Asia. India has consistently emphasised the need for dialogue and an end to ongoing conflicts in the region.

The meeting comes around two weeks after Modi and Pezeshkian held talks on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit. During their earlier interaction, India conveyed its position that peace should be prioritised and that the continuing conflict in West Asia cannot be allowed to persist indefinitely.

Pezeshkian’s participation in the BRICS Summit provides an opportunity for India and Iran to discuss the evolving regional situation and their broader bilateral engagement. The upcoming meeting is expected to draw attention given the continuing instability in West Asia.

The Iranian President’s departure from Tehran marks the beginning of his BRICS visit, while his scheduled meeting with Modi is likely to provide another platform for the two countries to exchange views on regional peace and security.
