Modi–Macron Mumbai Meeting: Defence Deals, AI Cooperation in Focus

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold key bilateral talks with French President Emmanuel Macron in Mumbai today, marking a significant moment in India–France relations. The discussions are expected to focus on defence collaboration, artificial intelligence cooperation, and strengthening strategic ties between the two nations.

Macron arrived in Mumbai for a three-day official visit aimed at deepening cooperation across technology, defence, innovation and global strategic issues. His visit underscores the growing importance of the India–France partnership in a rapidly changing geopolitical landscape.


Strategic Talks to Cover AI, Indo-Pacific and Innovation

Artificial intelligence and emerging technologies are expected to dominate the agenda, with both leaders exploring opportunities for joint innovation and digital cooperation.

The meeting will also review progress in the India–France Strategic Partnership and address regional and global issues, including Indo-Pacific cooperation.

Later in the day, the two leaders will jointly inaugurate the India–France Year of Innovation 2026 and engage with business leaders, startups, researchers and innovators, highlighting the technology-driven dimension of bilateral ties.

Macron is also scheduled to participate in the AI Impact Summit in New Delhi, reinforcing collaboration in future technologies.


Defence Cooperation at the Centre of Discussions

Defence collaboration remains a cornerstone of India–France relations, and today’s discussions are expected to strengthen this pillar further.

Key defence topics likely to be discussed include:

  • Joint manufacturing of helicopters under Make in India

  • Procurement and production of HAMMER precision-guided missiles

  • Support and upgrades for Rafale fighter aircraft

  • Cooperation in naval aviation and defence technology

  • Joint development in engines, drones and advanced systems

  • Expanded collaboration in space and strategic defence sectors

The HAMMER air-to-ground precision-guided missiles, already integrated into India’s Rafale fleet, are expected to feature prominently in discussions.

Officials may also discuss future Rafale-related support and long-term defence cooperation programmes.

During the Mumbai visit, the leaders will participate in multiple engagements including:

  • Bilateral meeting and MoU exchanges

  • India–France Innovation Forum

  • Cultural and innovation events at Gateway of India
