Unburdened by milestones and liberated from expectation, Virat Kohli appears to be scripting a bold final chapter in his ODI career — one driven by instinct, intent and immediate impact rather than patience and preservation.
In India’s recent ODI outing against New Zealand in Vadodara, Kohli needed just three deliveries to find the boundary. In earlier matches across Ranchi and Raipur, the pattern remained consistent: no prolonged settling-in period, no cautious accumulation. Instead, Kohli asserted himself early, even in conditions where traditional ODI wisdom would have advised restraint.
This shift marks a significant evolution in the approach of a batter long celebrated as the ultimate anchor. For much of his illustrious career, Kohli was the axis around which India’s ODI innings revolved — batting deep, controlling tempo and finishing chases with surgical precision. That version of Kohli valued time at the crease as the greatest currency.
Now, the priorities have changed.
Since returning to ODI action in October, Kohli has embraced a philosophy centred on proactive dominance. Rather than absorbing pressure, he is intent on reversing it. Rather than waiting for bowlers to err, he is forcing them into mistakes. The numbers reflect this transformation clearly: across seven ODIs since his return, Kohli has scored at a strike rate exceeding 103 — a notable jump from his career average in the format.
Speaking after his match-winning knock of 93 in Vadodara, Kohli explained the mindset behind the change. Batting at number three, he believes that when conditions are challenging, counterattack is often the safest option. In his view, modern white-ball cricket leaves little room for passive survival.
This evolution is not born out of desperation, but clarity. With records already secured and legacy firmly established, Kohli is batting with the freedom of someone who has nothing left to prove. The absence of personal milestones as motivation has unlocked a purer expression of his batting — one rooted in rhythm, awareness and fearless execution.
There is also a broader tactical context to this reinvention. ODI cricket has accelerated dramatically, with scoring rates rising and bowlers afforded minimal margin for error. The format increasingly rewards those who dictate terms early rather than those who merely endure.
Kohli’s approach mirrors the transformation seen in Rohit Sharma, who redefined India’s powerplay batting philosophy in recent global tournaments by prioritising impact over longevity. Kohli, operating one position lower, is now adapting similar principles — seizing momentum before it slips away.
Importantly, this is not reckless aggression. Kohli’s shot selection remains calculated, his fitness elite, and his understanding of conditions unmatched. What has changed is his acceptance that influence matters more than occupation. In choosing to attack earlier, he is maximising his relevance in a fast-evolving format.
At this stage of his career, Virat Kohli is no longer chasing validation. He is refining relevance. And in doing so, he is reminding the cricketing world that evolution — not nostalgia — is the hallmark of true greatness.
