Tensions between the United States and Iran have escalated sharply after Tehran issued a stark warning to US President Donald Trump, vowing to respond “in the hardest way possible” to any military action. The warning comes amid reports that a large US naval force, including an aircraft carrier and destroyers, is moving closer to Iran, raising fears of a broader regional conflict.
A senior Iranian official said that Tehran would treat any form of attack—whether limited, surgical, or full-scale—as an act of war. According to the official, Iran is prepared to deploy “everything at its disposal” in response to what it describes as a sustained military threat from Washington.
The warning followed Trump’s statement that a “big force” of American warships was heading toward the Middle East. The development marks a dramatic shift after recent signs suggested a temporary easing of tensions, when Trump appeared to step back from military action following assurances from Tehran regarding detained protesters.
Iran has been gripped by widespread anti-government protests since the start of the year. Activist groups claim that more than 5,000 people have been killed during the crackdown by security forces, adding to international scrutiny of the Islamic Republic’s leadership. Trump had earlier claimed that US pressure helped halt the execution of hundreds of detained protesters.
According to reports, the US Navy has deployed the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, accompanied by multiple destroyers equipped with Tomahawk cruise missiles. In addition, the US Air Force has reportedly positioned around a dozen F-15E fighter jets in the region, significantly boosting American strike capabilities.
Iranian officials said the country’s military has been placed on high alert, though details of potential countermeasures were not disclosed. The senior official stressed that while Tehran hopes the US buildup is not intended to trigger direct confrontation, it is preparing for worst-case scenarios.
Iran’s rhetoric has also intensified in recent days. A spokesperson for the country’s armed forces warned that any action against Iran’s Supreme Leader would lead to catastrophic consequences. Meanwhile, the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) stated that Iran’s forces had their “finger on the trigger,” issuing a clear message to both the US and Israel.
The renewed escalation comes shortly after Trump returned to the United States from the World Economic Forum in Davos. Analysts say his mixed messaging—alternating between de-escalation and hardline threats—has added uncertainty to an already volatile situation.
Regional observers warn that any miscalculation could rapidly spiral into a wider conflict involving US allies and Iran-backed groups across the Middle East. With military assets on both sides now on heightened readiness, diplomatic channels appear increasingly strained.
As of now, no direct military action has been confirmed. However, the scale of the US deployment and the sharpness of Iran’s response suggest that the standoff has entered one of its most dangerous phases in recent years.
