The first Ramayana movie reviews following the Los Angeles premiere of Ramayana: The Rise of a Legend have generated enthusiastic reactions, with viewers praising Ranbir Kapoor’s portrayal of Lord Rama and Yash’s performance as Ravana. Early responses have highlighted the film’s emotional storytelling, soundtrack, visual effects and action sequences.

Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, the mythological epic stars Ranbir as Lord Rama, Yash as Ravana and Sai Pallavi as Goddess Sita. The film was screened at the David Geffen Theatre at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles, where viewers shared their initial reactions on Letterboxd.

Several reviewers awarded the film high ratings, with one five-star review describing Rama’s portrayal as pure and praising the freshness of the fight sequences. Another viewer commended the filmmakers for staying true to the story’s core emotions and highlighted the music and visual effects.

Ranbir Kapoor and Yash Draw Strong Reactions

Ranbir’s performance as Lord Rama received praise for its restrained emotional expression, while Yash emerged as a standout for several viewers. One early reaction described the experience as cinematic and said Yash dominated the screen.

An international viewer, who said they had never watched an Indian film before, gave the film four-and-a-half stars. The reviewer said the story and music were emotionally powerful, describing the soundtrack as divine and the characters as layered and convincing.

The same viewer praised the climax for delivering goosebumps and said they would like to watch the film again with their family. Ravana’s portrayal also made an impression, with some moments described as unsettling and intense.

Visual Effects and Music Become Talking Points

The film’s visual effects attracted attention alongside its performances. One reviewer specifically praised DNEG’s work, suggesting that the studio had demonstrated its ability to compete with major international visual-effects companies, including Industrial Light & Magic and Wētā FX.

The music, emotional sequences and action scenes also featured prominently in the early responses. However, these reactions represent individual viewers’ opinions and should not be treated as a definitive assessment of the film’s wider reception.

Cast Attends Los Angeles Premiere

The premiere brought the principal cast together in Los Angeles. Ranbir attended in a silver bandhgala, while Yash wore an all-black outfit featuring a Ravana-themed brooch. His wife, Radhika Pandit, appeared in a green-and-gold silk saree.

Sai Pallavi, who plays Goddess Sita, wore a red embroidered zardozi saree.

The initial reactions have raised expectations among fans, particularly around the performances, music and visual scale of the mythological epic. Broader audience responses will provide a clearer picture of the film’s reception.
