Shahid Afridi Praises Rohit Sharma After Losing ODI Sixes World Record

Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi responded graciously after Rohit Sharma broke his long-standing world record for the most sixes in one-day internationals. Rohit surpassed Afridi’s tally of 351 sixes during India’s ODI against South Africa on November 30 in Ranchi, sending a trademark pull shot off Marco Jansen into the stands to seal the milestone.

Afridi, whose six-hitting defined an era, praised Rohit’s achievement and recalled their time together at Deccan Chargers during the inaugural IPL season. He said Rohit’s effortless batting in practice sessions had impressed him early on, and he always believed the youngster would go on to represent India with distinction.

Both players share a legacy of power-hitting but across vastly different eras. Rohit now has 355 sixes in just 271 ODI innings, while Afridi finished his career with 351 in 369 innings at a time when boundaries were larger and bats less advanced.

Rohit’s resurgence continues after a renewed focus on fitness and his return to limited-overs cricket post-Test retirement. The 38-year-old has scored 348 runs in six matches since October, with one century and three fifties, strengthening his case for a spot in India’s 2027 ODI World Cup campaign.

Afridi said he was pleased to see a player he admired break his record, calling Rohit a “classy batter” who has fully lived up to his potential.
