The DU 28-credit promotion rule has been relaxed for students of the 2025-26 academic batch as a one-time measure, exempting them from the requirement of securing 28 credits out of 44 for promotion. The decision has prompted concerns among Delhi University teachers over its timing, transparency and implications for consistency in the examination system.
One-time exemption for 2025-26 batch
According to a notification issued by the university's Controller of Examinations, students from the 2025-26 batch who have completed one year of study will not be required to meet the 28-credit threshold for promotion. The exemption is limited to this particular batch and will not apply to subsequent batches.
The notification states that all other provisions of earlier notifications will remain unchanged and that the decision was taken with the approval of the competent authority. However, it does not specify the circumstances or reasons behind the one-time relaxation.
Teachers question timing and transparency
Teachers have raised questions over why the criteria were changed after students had already progressed into the third semester. Abha Dev Habib, secretary of the Delhi University Teachers' Federation (DTF) and associate professor at Miranda House, questioned the absence of an explanation regarding the circumstances or hardships that prompted the exemption.
She also questioned whether a large number of students failing to meet the prescribed requirement could have influenced the decision.
Rudrashish Chakraborty, DTF treasurer, associate professor at Kirori Mal College and former Academic Council member, also raised concerns about the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) and the growing number of papers.
Concerns over examination consistency
Teachers have also pointed to the timing of the decision. Third-semester classes began on July 28, while examination results continued to be declared through August.
The university notification does not provide further details about the reason for changing the promotion requirement. The debate therefore remains focused on the timing, transparency and consistency of the decision.
