Monsoon Withdrawal Advances on October 3, Rain Expected in South and Northeast

The IMD expects the southwest monsoon to withdraw further from north and central India on October 3, while rain and thunderstorms continue in southern and northeastern regions.

Heavy rain and monsoon weather conditions in India during monsoon withdrawal
Rain continues across parts of southern and northeastern India as the southwest monsoon withdraws further on October 3.

The monsoon withdrawal is expected to advance further across parts of north and central India on October 3, while rain and thunderstorms remain likely over several southern and northeastern areas, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The weather department said conditions are likely to become favourable for the southwest monsoon to withdraw from the remaining parts of Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan, most parts of Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, as well as the entire Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand during the next 24 hours.

Some parts of Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra may also witness further withdrawal.

Rain and thunderstorms in south and northeast

Despite the advancing monsoon withdrawal, several regions are expected to remain active. Isolated heavy rainfall is likely over Arunachal Pradesh on October 3, while thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are possible over Assam, Meghalaya and the states of Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura.

Southern India is also expected to receive rainfall and thunderstorms. Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal may experience thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds reaching 40-50 kmph.

Similar thunderstorms, with winds of 30-40 kmph, are possible at isolated places over Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Mahe, Lakshadweep, and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim.

Monsoon withdrawal enters a new phase

The withdrawal line on October 2 extended from Gurdaspur through Chandigarh, Muzaffarnagar, Aligarh, Dholpur, Udaipur, Deesa and Naliya. The IMD expects the line to move further during the next 24 hours as India transitions towards the post-monsoon period.

Fairly widespread rain is expected over Kerala and Lakshadweep, while coastal Karnataka may also receive widespread rainfall. Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and South Interior Karnataka are likely to see isolated rain.

The IMD's latest forecasts and weather warnings are available on its official website.
